Notice of Public Meetings

North Charleston City Council will receive for first reading the proposed maps (NAACP2 and City Feb. 6) at the City Council Meeting on Thursday, February 23, 2023, beginning at 7:00 pm in Council Chambers on the third floor of City Hall, 2500 City Hall Lane, North Charleston, SC 29406.  First reading of an ordinance is typically a short process resulting in an item being referred to Committee to better allow for public input and discussion.

Thereafter, the North Charleston Committee of the Whole will meet on Thursday, March 16, 2023, beginning at 5:00 pm in the Buist Conference Room on the third floor of City Hall, 2500 City Hall Lane, North Charleston, SC 29406.  Public comment and discussion will occur. It is expected that the matter will be referred out of committee and back to City Council meeting of Thursday, March 23, 2023 (7:00 pm).  (Should a subsequent reading at City Council be appropriate it is anticipated that such a reading would take place on Thursday, April 13, 2023 at 7:00 pm.)

The intent of the various meetings is to receive input from the public and discuss proposed changes to the City Council districts to reflect the population and demographic information compiled and released as part of the 2020 Decennial Census. This process of redrawing the district boundaries to reflect population shifts occurring since the last Census count is referred to as redistricting and is required by the United States Constitution, the Voting Rights Act of 1965, as amended, and other federal and state laws and regulations.

The public meetings will be streamed online at https://www.facebook.com/northcharleston/live.
