NCPD officers awarded for helping man suffering from medical episode

Please join the North Charleston Police Department in congratulating Sgt. Danielle Sherwood, Pfc. Andrew Johnson, and Pfc. Chris T. Cooper for earning Certificates of Recognition for October 2024. On October 22, a man from California called our agency in a panic, seeking assistance. He explained that his adult son lives in North Charleston and was struggling with severe alcoholism and depression.
The father had been unable to contact him for over a week, and his son’s phone was turned off. The father also mentioned that during their last conversation, his son had expressed feelings of depression and suicidal thoughts. The son’s ex-girlfriend had visited his residence, but there was no response.
Sgt. Sherwood, while on another call, quickly coordinated with Pfc. Johnson and Pfc. Cooper to conduct a welfare check at the son’s residence, understanding that the father was elderly and the situation could be life-threatening. The officers obtained a key and found the son suffering from a medical episode that may have been related to his addiction.
They promptly called EMS when they discovered that the son had been lying on the floor for days and was unable to move. Great job by the officers for their quick response and commitment to helping the father!
