Roper St. Francis Healthcare
On August 1, 1998, Roper and Bon Secours St. Francis Hospitals combined their resources to form the CareAlliance Health Services corporation. Today known as Roper St. Francis Healthcare, this represents more than 350 years of community-based, quality health care. Roper Hospital was founded in 1850 as the first community hospital in the Carolinas. The 453-bed acute care facility and regional referral center offers signature services including Roper Heart Care, Roper Cancer Center, Neurosciences, Orthopedics and Women’s, Infants’ & Children’s Services. A small infirmary called The St. Francis Infirmary was opened in 1882 by the Sisters of Charity of Our Lady of Mercy to provide care for patients with yellow fever. Today one of the area’s largest hospitals, Bon Secours St. Francis operates from its brand new home in West Ashley. Charleston Memorial Hospital
This hospital, located downtown in the “hospital” district is operated by the Medical University of South Carolina and owned by Charleston County. The hospital was the first in the area to offer a full service emergency room. Recently remodeled, the 200-plus bed facility provides excellent health care to Lowcountry residents. East Cooper Community Hospital
Located in East Cooper this regional medical center is housed at 1200 Johnnie Dodds Blvd. This 100-bed medical facility provides exceptional health care to residents of Mount Pleasant. Twenty-four hour emergency service and physician’s offices make the East Cooper Medical Center a complete health care system. The hospital opened in 1986. The Medical University of South Carolina
This teaching hospital is located on the campus of the MUSC. The Medical University of South Carolina’s 58 acre campus houses six colleges including ones in the fields of nursing, dentistry and pharmacy. The 596-bed hospital’s reputation far exceeds the borders of the state, and the hospital’s physicians have performed life-saving surgery on patients from as far away as Eastern Europe. The medical facility specializes in several areas such as pediatrics, oncology and psychiatry. The university currently enrolls more than 2,000 students and is the oldest of its kind in the South.
