School Field Trip Opportunities!

The City of North Charleston Cultural Arts Department’s Children’s Theatre Series provides an excellent field trip opportunity for students in the Tri-County area.  Daycares, families, and seniors are also welcome to enjoy the exciting presentations.  Unless otherwise noted, the minimal charge of $2.00 per child enables all adult chaperones to attend FREE.  Admission fee is waived for students attending Title I schools.  Schools are responsible for their own transportation to the North Charleston Performing Arts Center, located at 5001 Coliseum Drive, North Charleston, SC 29418.  All performances begin at 10:00am and last approximately one hour.  Groups of 10+ must register in advance.  Reservation forms are available on the Arts & Culture section of the City’s website at northcharleston.org.  Payment is due at the door by cash, credit card, money order, or check made payable to the City of North Charleston. All Children’s Theatre performances are designed in accordance with state curriculum standards.  Educators may visit the performing groups’ websites or contact them directly to access study guides and lesson plans.

“THE RELUCTANT DRAGON” presented by Atlantic Coast Theatre

Sir George is hired to slay a Dragon who is more interested in reciting Shakespeare than fighting in this charming adaptation of Kenneth Grahame’s tale.  Together, they stage a grand battle for the villagers, and learn to look beyond outside appearances to find friendship.  Don Gruel & Noel Holland of Atlantic Coast Theatre for Youth have been touring throughout the U.S. since 1995, giving hundreds of performances for more than 70,000 audience members annually.  More information can be found at www.atlantic-coast-theatre.com.  (For grades K-8)


“AFRICAN FOLKTALES” presented by Bright Star Touring Theatre

From the desert lands of the Sahara to the plains of the Serengeti to Mount Kilimanjaro and beyond – join a variety of characters from a wide range of cultures in stories that celebrate the various folk tale traditions of the continent of Africa.  African music helps to set the stage for these energetic stories.  Our stories include Anansi, porquoi tales, and many facts and figures about this incredible continent.  The 2019/20 season marks Bright Star Touring Theatre’s 17th anniversary of providing professional theatre to young audiences!  The group travels across the nation, providing more than 1,400 performances to young audiences in a variety of venues each year.  More information can be found at www.brightstartheatre.com.  (For grades K-5)


“R.A.P. – REALIZE ANYTHING’S POSSIBLE” presented by Cutright and Ike Hill

Cutright and Ike Hill, members of JustHIS League Music Group (JHLMG), deliver an entertaining and energetic presentation using humor, crowd engagement, and rap to help youth realize that anything is possible when you have the right perspective.  Rap music is arguably the most popular and influential music that our youth listen to today, and when it’s paired with a positive message, it can make a lasting impression that could impact them for the rest of their lives.  JHLMG is based in Charlotte, NC, with members that travel the nation spreading positive messages that encourage people of all ages and backgrounds.  Their artists have shared the stage with Grammy Award-winning and nominated musicians such as Lecrae, Israel Houghton, Mali Music, and Tye Tribbett.
