The public is encouraged to apply for City employment vacancies through the Human Resources Department. The City receives a large number of applications each year. Vacancies are advertised on the Human Resources Department bulletin board, the City’s website, newspapers, professional journals, and at job fairs.

The Human Resources Department performs the following functions: Wage and fringe benefit calculations; record preparation and maintenance; guidance and assistance to all employees relating to conditions and requirements of employment; interpretation and administration of personnel policy and procedures and affirmative action-equal opportunity programs; training and general support to the Mayor and City Council, as well as City Departments.
Orientation for new, full-time employees is held monthly on the 1st Friday of the month.
The Human Resources Department works with Job Service, which provides job referrals, placements and labor market statistics. Job Service is located at 176 Lockwood Boulevard, Charleston, SC or 2885 West 5th Avenue, Summerville, SC.
Human Resources is located in City Hall on the 3rd floor. Hours of operation are Monday – Friday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. Human Resources is closed on all City observed Holidays.
