Five officers awarded for saving man’s life

Please join our agency in congratulating five officers for receiving the Lifesaving Award for June 2024. The officers are Sgt. Abril Washington-Sanders, Pfc. Peter Molina, Pfc. Juan Estrada, Ptl. Jenna Helberg, and Ptl. Nicholas Gonzales.
On June 20, officers responded to a hotel on North Arco Lane where a subject was on the third floor with a knife to his throat, threatening to jump. Officers Helberg and Gonzales had a previous encounter with the subject a few days before. They re-established a connection with him through calm engagement and established trust. They eventually got him to return to the hotel along with Pfc. Estrada and the department’s negotiators, Sgt. Washington-Sanders, and Pfc. Molina. They took him into protective custody.
