North Charleston Mayor Keith Summey is proud to announce Assistant Chief Greg Gomes, a native of North Charleston, has been selected as the next Chief of Police, effective May 1, 2023, following the retirement of current Chief Reggie Burgess.
Assistant Chief Gomes brings over 25 years of experience in law enforcement to his new role, having served in a variety of leadership positions with the North Charleston Police Department. He is a graduate of the Southern Police Institute at the University of Louisville’s 80th Command Officers’ Development Course and graduated with honors from the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy.
In his most recent role as Assistant Chief of Police, which he has held since February 2020, Gomes has been responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the North Charleston Police Department. Prior to that, he served as Deputy Police Chief of the Investigative Divisions from October 2016 to February 2020, and as Captain of the Office of Professional Standards and Compliance Division from June 2013 to October 2016.
Mayor Keith Summey praised Assistant Chief Gomes as a well-qualified and capable leader, stating, “With his extensive experience, impressive credentials, and deep commitment to serving the community, I know Assistant Chief Gomes is the right person to lead the North Charleston Police Department forward. As a native of North Charleston, he has a deep and abiding commitment to our city, and I am excited to see what he will accomplish as Police Chief.”
Mayor Summey added, “I want to express my sincere appreciation to Chief Burgess for his dedicated service to our community. Under his leadership, the North Charleston Police Department has made great strides in building strong relationships with our citizens, improving public safety, and implementing community policing practices.
Incoming Chief Greg Gomes expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to serve as Chief of Police, stating, “As someone who grew up in North Charleston and has dedicated my entire career to serving this city, I am truly humbled and honored to be named the next Police Chief. I believe in the power of community policing, and I look forward to continuing to work with the men and women of the North Charleston Police Department to build trust, foster positive relationships, and ensure the safety and well-being of all of our citizens. ”
Chief Reggie Burgess also spoke about the transition, saying, “I am confident that Assistant Chief Gomes will continue to lead the North Charleston Police Department with integrity, professionalism, and a commitment to excellence. I wish him all the best in his new role and look forward to supporting him as he takes on this important responsibility.”
