Deputy Chief Angela Johnson grew up in North Charleston, and upon graduating from high school, she attended Claflin College, now Claflin University, where she received her Bachelor’s Degree. After graduating from college, she taught middle school for a year and decided to switch career paths. In 1996, she was hired at the North Charleston Police Department as a police officer and has worked there for 27 years.
She has had numerous assignments at the police department over the years and has made a point to continue her education. In 2011 she received a Master’s in Business Administration; in 2020, she received a Master’s in Criminal Justice and her Doctorate in Business. In 2015, she became a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. She has worked her way through the ranks of the city of North Charleston Police Department. In August 2022, she was promoted to Deputy Chief, making her the first African American female to achieve this rank in the department’s history.
