The City of North Charleston will cut the ribbon on on Wednesday, April 4, 2018 at 10:00am. An open house will immediately follow until 2:00pm. The first day of activities and gym access is Thursday, April 5. The Center, located at 6255 Dorchester Road, is the first senior-adult oriented facility in North Charleston, servicing citizens ages 50 and up.
Design and amenities of the 11,000 square foot senior center have been carefully planned to promote health wellness, encourage social interaction, and support ongoing educational opportunities. Features of the Center include, an exercise room, gym, an indoor exercise pool, pickleball courts, five activity rooms, and a coffee bar. Each of the areas have been programmed to encourage participation and interaction among senior center patrons.
“With the addition of The Senior Center at Dorchester Road, it rounds out and enhances our already vast recreational and cultural offerings to the senior citizens of North Charleston,” said North Charleston Mayor Keith Summey. “Through the many offerings and inviting atmosphere and staff, I envision this center as a focal point of the community to bring our residents even closer together.”“Since the creation of the Mayor’s Office on Aging in 2008, I have had the opportunity to work every day with the senior citizens of North Charleston,” said Kim Ford, Senior Services Manager. “City Council and Mayor Summey have stepped up to provide our city’s seniors a state of the art facility catering to the specific mental and physical wellness of our active adult community.”“I am pleased the Lieutenant Governor’s Office on Aging played a role in building the Senior Center at Dorchester Road through our Senior Center Permanent Improvement Project (PIP) grant program. This senior center will serve as a gateway to the city’s aging network – connecting older adults to vital community services that can help them stay healthy and independent, and, most importantly, keep living at home where they and their loved ones prefer them to be for as long as possible” said Lieutenant Governor Kevin Bryant. “The Senior Center at Dorchester Road will serve the citizens of North Charleston for many years to come as a fully-functioning, multi-purpose senior center.”The Lt. Governor’s Permanent Improvement Project Grant Program provided $350,000 towards the construction of the facility. Total project cost was $5,000,000.
