Tropical Storm Debby Update #4 – North Charleston Operations and Important Information for Residents

City Operations
All City of North Charleston offices will remain closed through Thursday, August 8, 2024. The City Council Meeting on Thursday, August 8 is cancelled.

Shelter Information
In Charleston County, individuals needing shelter should use the 3831 Leeds Avenue location (behind the Bond Court), which will remain open for the duration of the storm, accepting both the general population and pets.
In Dorchester County two shelters are open at Charles B. Dubose Middle School, 1005 Dubose School Rd, Summerville, SC 29483 and Woodland High School, 4128 US-78, Dorchester, SC 29437. Both shelters are pet-friendly and equipped to support residents during this challenging time.
 
Road Closures

Damage Assessments
North Charleston officials are conducting structural damage assessments following Tropical Storm Debby and need residents’ help to identify all damage. With over 42,000 housing units in the city, residents are urged to report any structural damage or water intrusion at www.northcharleston.org/damages, detailing the extent and impact on habitable spaces, garage areas, and mechanical systems. Inspectors will follow up with home visits and life safety inspections. Documenting all damage is crucial for FEMA compliance and potential federal assistance, even if homes are insured.
 
Trash Collection
Trash collection is suspended. Collection will resume on Thursday, August 8. Tuesday’s route will be collected on Thursday, Wednesday’s route on Friday. Thursday’s route will be dependent upon landfill operations on Saturday.
 
Court Operations
Municipal Court is closed through Thursday, August 8, 2024. However, bond hearings will take place daily. All individuals with scheduled court dates will be notified by mail of their rescheduled dates.
 
Recreation and Cultural Arts Operations
All recreational and cultural arts programs and activities, including Summer Camp, Athletics, and the North Charleston Farmers Market, are canceled through Thursday. Facilities such as Athletic Buildings, Community Centers, Senior Centers, and Park Circle Playground will remain closed through Thursday.
 
Sandbag Operations
Sandbag operations have concluded, with over 15,000 filled bags distributed.
