The City of North Charleston’s Cultural Arts Department invites adults to participate in Creative Arts Workshops held on the fourth Saturday of each month from 10:00am-12:00pm at Park Circle Community Building, located at 4800 Park Circle (unless otherwise noted). Each interactive workshop is led by a different local artist and provides participants with a unique opportunity to learn new techniques in a relaxed atmosphere. Varying skill levels are welcome and the cost is $20, materials provided. Registration opens the first business day of the month that the workshop takes places and closes two days prior to each workshop. Space is limited. June 22, 2024 ● Pet Pawtraits with Kelly Kopacka ● In this Pet “Pawtrait” workshop, adult participants will receive step-by-step instruction and guidance from local artist Kelly Kopacka to create an acrylic painting of their dog or cat on canvas. Learn to use bold color and expressive brushwork to capture the personality of your furry companion. Participants must bring a clear photo of their pet for reference.
July 27, 2024 ● The Basics of Alcohol Inks with Meg Homeier ● In this workshop adult students will be introduced to alcohol ink, a fascinating and fluid medium. The colors are intense, and they flow faster than watercolor. Local artist Meg Homeier will present a short demo and talk about the properties of the inks and how to blend them and move them around on Yupo paper using unusual tools like straws. She will also offer instruction on techniques like tipping the paper and spritzing with clear alcohol. The magic happens when the colors start to mix on the paper. Each participants’ creations will be unique and worth framing.
August 24, 2024 ● Macrame Wall Hangings with Rosie the Wanderer ● Join Aliza from Rosie the Wanderer for an introduction to basic macrame. Adult participants will learn many fun knot patterns and designs to create a macrame wall hanging. Note that the workshop involves kneeling or sitting on the floor for the last 20 minutes or so, so dress comfy and get ready for some fun!
September 28, 2024 ● Botanical Gelli Printing with Melissa Meverden ● Celebrate the changing of the seasons by mono-printing with local botanicals. Local artist and educator Melissa Meverden will guide adult participants through the process of mono-printing on a gel plate using acrylic paint and grasses, leaves, flowers, etc. The resulting prints are wonderful for framing as art or using in other crafts. Feel free to bring your own plants to print with!
October 26, 2024 ● Building a Sketchbook Practice with Kelly Kopacka ● Whether you’re starting fresh or looking to invigorate your creative process, this sketchbook workshop is designed to ignite imagination and help circumvent artist block! Participants will explore techniques for expressing their personal artistic style through sketching, doodling, and collaging. Guided by illustrator and designer Kelly Kopacka, attendees will learn the benefits of building a daily sketchbook practice. All materials will be provided, but students are welcome to bring their own personal sketchbook if desired.
November 23, 2024 ● Disco Ball Coasters with Molly Carey ● Local artist Molly Carey will lead participants step-by-step through the process of creating disco ball-themed coasters. Participants will use acrylic paint to create their design, then learn how to cover the coasters in resin to give them a smooth, glossy finish. Keep the coaster set for yourself or gift them for the holidays!
