The City of North Charleston is located in Charleston, Berkeley and Dorchester Counties in southeastern South Carolina, just northwest of the City of Charleston. The City is bordered by the Cooper River to the East and the Ashley River to the West.
According to the 2012 US Census estimates, the City of North Charleston has a population 101,989 residents and covers approximately 76.7 square miles. The City is the State’s third largest municipality in population and area. North Charleston has grown to the west and the north into Dorchester County. This previously undeveloped property of Dorchester is one of the fastest growing counties in South Carolina.
Annexation has allowed the extension of infrastructure. This, along with the City being located in the geographic and population center of the metropolitan area, and its position as the transportation hub of the region has contributed to rapid growth.
